There’s something quietly perfect about a warm flask of porridge on a crisp autumn walk. The air feels sharper, the light gentler, and everything slows down a little. This simple thermos porridge recipe is our go-to for unhurried mornings — especially along the South Downs or the windswept path at Seaford Beach.
Ingredients (Serves 2–3)
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 2 cups milk (or your favourite dairy-free alternative)
- 1 apple, thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- A pinch of salt
- Optional toppings: extra apple slices, a sprinkle of brown sugar, chopped nuts
Method
- In a small saucepan, combine oats, milk, honey, cinnamon, and salt.
- Cook over medium heat for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until creamy.
- Slice half the apple and stir it into the porridge; save the rest for topping.
- Remove from the heat and let it sit for a minute or two.
- Pour the warm porridge into your pre-heated thermos (fill with boiling water for 5 minutes first, then empty).
- Top with the remaining apple slices and a dusting of cinnamon.
Seal, pack, and go. By the time you’ve reached the cliff path, the porridge will still be hot and comforting — perfect for a slow, thoughtful morning.
