Cordless has largely replaced upright as the default UK vacuum, but the upright still has a real place. Continuous suction without battery limitation, larger dust capacity, lower ongoing cost, and a heavier brush bar that handles deep carpet better than most cordless equivalents. This guide covers the picks that earn their place in 2026 — the modern uprights worth your money and the cases where upright still beats cordless.

Quick answer: An upright still beats a cordless on deep carpet, daily vacuuming and larger homes, and a good corded model lasts 8–10 years against 4–6 for a cordless. Our best overall is the Shark Powered Lift-Away NZ801UKT; on a budget, the Vax LiftOut Reach Pet; for a corded machine built to last, the Numatic Henry XL Plus. In a small flat, or if the cable would bother you, a cordless suits you better.
How we chose these uprights
We required complete-seal HEPA rather than a HEPA filter in a leaky body, compared suction against weight (sub-4kg uprights tend to trade away the suction that makes an upright worth having), and set a realistic price floor around £130. These are researched picks, not first-hand reviews, and we don’t accept payment for placement. Read our full methodology →
When upright still wins
Deep carpet. Modern cordless vacuums are good but the heavier brush bar of an upright still pulls more debris from deep pile and shag carpet. If your home is mostly carpeted, upright is worth considering. For stains and a deep wash, a carpet cleaner does the job a vacuum can’t.
High-traffic vacuuming. If you vacuum daily — a busy family home, a pet household, a high-traffic rental — corded means you never wait for the battery to charge. The cordless inconvenience adds up across a year.
Larger homes. Cordless run time of 30–60 minutes means you sometimes need to break a clean into two sessions. An upright with a 10m+ cable does the whole house in one go.
Lower lifetime cost. A good corded upright lasts 8–10 years. A cordless lasts 4–6 years before battery degradation requires replacement (or replacement of the whole unit). Annualised, corded is cheaper.
Budget constraints. Decent corded uprights start at £100. Decent cordless starts at £180. The gap widens at the premium end.
When upright is the wrong choice
Small flats where storage matters. Stairs where carrying is awkward. Households where vacuum frequency is low enough that battery degradation isn’t an issue. Anyone bothered by the cable. All these are cordless cases.

Quick Picks

Shark Corded Upright Vacuum Cleaner,0.83L, Pet Model, Navy/Orange, 750W | Anti Hair Wrap Technology & DuoClean, Powered Lift-Away, LED Headlights, Anti-Allergen, 8m Cord, 3 Attachments, NZ801UKT
1. Shark Powered Lift-Away NZ801UKT — Best Overall (~£280)
Shark’s Powered Lift-Away with Anti Hair Wrap, which clears hair from the brush-roll as you clean. The DuoClean floorhead runs two motorised brush-rolls for carpet and hard floors, LED headlights show what is under the furniture, and the canister lifts off for stairs and ceilings. The trade-off is capacity: the 0.83-litre dust cup is small for a large, mostly carpeted house, so expect to empty it mid-clean. At around £280 it is the upright to look at first for most UK households who want continuous mains suction and Shark’s hair-wrap technology in one machine.

2. Numatic Henry XL Plus NRV370 — Best Heirloom Corded (~£140)
Technically a cylinder rather than an upright but worth mentioning here for households deciding between formats. The XL Plus is a 15-litre Henry on the same design that has barely changed in forty years, with a 12.5m cable and self-seal bags for dust-free emptying. Built to last decades, parts available everywhere, repairable indefinitely. The right buy if you want a corded vacuum you’ll never replace. Less convenient than an upright for stairs and large rooms but unbeatable on longevity.

3. Vax LiftOut Reach Pet CDUP-LOXR — Best Budget Upright (~£135)
Vax’s budget upright, and the one that keeps the entry price honest. The LiftOut Reach Pet has the detachable cylinder the LiftOut name refers to, so you get some of the Lift-Away trick of the Shark for about half the money, with a turbine pet tool in the box, a brush roll that resists hair wrap and a 14.5m cleaning reach. Not in the league of the Shark on suction or build, but at about £135 it is a usable upright for households on a tight budget, and Vax backs it with a five-year guarantee.

4. Dyson Ball Animal Multi-floor — Best Premium Upright (~£430)

Dyson Ball™ Animal Multi Floor Vacuum Cleaner | Cleans carpets better than any other upright de-tangling vacuum.
Dyson’s full-size corded upright. Powerful suction, the Ball technology that genuinely improves manoeuvrability round furniture, whole-machine filtration rated to capture 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns, and a Motorbar head whose vanes de-tangle hair as it cleans, plus a tangle-free turbine tool for stairs and upholstery. It is a heavy machine to push and to carry upstairs, so check the listed weight if you have stairs, but the suction is the reward. The right pick if you want the best corded suction and don’t mind the weight.

5. SEBO Automatic X7 Extra ePower — Best Bag-Based Upright (~£459)
For households who specifically want a bagged vacuum — no emptying mess, far less dust released when you change the bag, and, with its S-Class filter, the kind of high-filtration machine Allergy UK advises for dust mite allergy. The X7 takes a 5-litre Ultra Bag, and its S-Class filtration removes 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns. An 890W motor, computer-controlled automatic height adjustment, and an integrated hose, wand and onboard tools. It is the dearest machine on this list by some way, and it carries a five-year domestic parts-and-labour warranty.

6. Shark Detect LA450UKT — Best Mid-Range (~£260)

Shark Detect Corded Upright Vacuum Cleaner, LA450UKTBK | Ultra-Powerful Pet Hair Pick-Up with Anti Hair Wrap Plus, DuoClean Detect & Direction Detect, Anti-Allergen Complete Seal
A corded upright with the same Anti Hair Wrap Plus technology as the Shark cordless range, but with continuous mains suction (no battery throttling). Its DuoClean Detect floorhead runs two brush-rolls with sensors that do the adjusting for you: FloorDetect changes brush-roll speed between carpet and hard floors, and DirectionDetect cleans on the pull stroke as well as the push. The Anti-Allergen Complete Seal is rated to trap 99.9% of dust and allergens, and Anti-Odour technology keeps the bin from smelling. Lift-Away turns it into a portable canister for stairs and upholstery, the bin holds 1.2 litres, and the 8-metre cord covers most rooms from a single socket. It sits mid-list on price and adds the floor-sensing, two-way cleaning and larger bin that the Lift-Away at number one does without.

What to skip
Upright vacuums under £80. Cheap motor, short lifespan, poor suction. The £135 Vax is the realistic floor.
Bagless uprights without sealed HEPA. Defeat the point of HEPA filtration. Look for “complete seal” certification.
Lightweight uprights that sacrifice suction for weight. Sub-4kg uprights typically have too small a motor. Either accept the weight (4.5kg+) or buy cordless.
“Steam mop combination” uprights. Solve neither problem well. Get a dedicated vacuum and a dedicated steam mop.
Care that doubles the lifespan
Empty after every use. Full bins reduce suction and stress the motor.
Wash filters monthly. Standard for any modern upright. Rinse the HEPA filter under cold water, dry 24 hours, refit.
Cut hair off the brush bar. Anti-tangle brushes (Shark Anti Hair Wrap) reduce this but don’t eliminate it. Standard brushes need scissor-and-pull every 2–4 weeks.
Check the belt annually. Most uprights have a drive belt for the brush bar that wears over time. Replacement belts are £5–£10 and take 10 minutes to fit.
Replace filters every 1–2 years. Washing extends life but eventually the HEPA filter needs replacing. Genuine manufacturer filters last longer than generic.
